ChatGPT tells
What gives a ChatGPT draft away
GPT writes to a shape. Once you have read a few hundred of its paragraphs the shape is hard to unsee, and it survives almost every prompt asking it to sound casual — because the instruction changes the register, not the scaffolding underneath it.
Explicit signposting
'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', 'In conclusion'. GPT narrates the structure of its own argument out loud, in places where a person would simply move to the next point and trust you to follow.
The rule of three
Lists arrive in threes with striking regularity — three adjectives, three examples, three clauses in a sentence. Human writers list two things, or five, or one thing twice for emphasis.
Balanced hedging
'While X offers clear benefits, it is important to consider Y.' Every claim is immediately counterweighted, so paragraphs end level rather than anywhere in particular. It reads even-handed and says very little.
The restating close
A final paragraph that summarises the preceding ones without adding to them. In a five-paragraph answer it is often the most detectable single passage, because almost nobody writes that way unprompted outside a school essay.
Uniform paragraph mass
Three to four sentences, over and over, each roughly the length of the last. Human paragraphs vary wildly — a nine-line block, then a two-word one.
These are patterns a careful reader can notice, not a wordlist. The rewrite does not work by swapping delve for explore — that leaves every paragraph the same weight and every argument the same shape, which is where the signal actually lives.
What changes
Structure first, vocabulary second
Swapping 'delve' for 'explore' changes almost nothing, because the signal is not in the word — it is in the fact that every paragraph is the same weight and every argument arrives pre-balanced. The rewrite breaks the metronome: sentence lengths spread out, the signposts come out, the tricolons lose or gain a member, and the restating final paragraph goes. What comes back is checked by our own detector before you see it, and if no draft clears the bar we tell you rather than handing you the least-bad one.
One limit worth knowing before you use the output: nothing here verifies that the rewrite kept your meaning. Read it against your original — numbers, names and dates first.

How a rewrite runs
What happens when you paste ChatGPT text
You paste a passage of ChatGPT output — up to 1,200 words in one go. Longer documents work best split at section boundaries, which also gives you a chance to check each part against the original as you go. The service generates several candidate rewrites rather than a single attempt, because the variation between drafts is what makes the next step worth anything.
Each candidate is scored by our own AI detector, the same one that powers the rest of this site. If a draft clears that check, you get it. If none of them do, you are told, and the words are refunded to the daily allowance rather than spent on a failure. We do not return the least-bad draft dressed up as a success.
The free allowance is 2,000 words a day with no account and no card, or 10,000 signed in. It refreshes the next UTC day rather than expiring as a trial. Unused words do not roll over. Pasted text is sent to our inference service to be rewritten and scored; it is not sold, shared, or used to train a model. The privacy policy in the footer is the longer version of that sentence.
Nothing in this pipeline verifies that the rewrite kept your meaning. Numbers, names, dates, and caveats can move or drop. Compare the result against the original before you use it. That is not boilerplate. It is the failure mode we see most, especially on long formal ChatGPT drafts.
ChatGPT is the most common source people paste in, which is why its tells are the ones this rewrite is most often asked to undo. The signposted argument, the tricolon, the restating close — those are architectural, and a synonym pass leaves every one of them standing. If you have already run the draft through a paraphraser, expect a harder job: the vocabulary has moved and the shape has not, which is the combination detectors still catch.
The rewrite generates several candidate drafts and scores each one with the same detector that powers the rest of this site. You only see a draft that clears that check. That is a real, checkable claim about our detector, and it is the only detection claim we make. What GPTZero, Turnitin, or Originality.ai would say about the same output is outside what we measure.
Read numbers, names, dates, and citations against the original. GPT is already unreliable on those; a rewrite on top of a hallucinated figure does not become true because it now sounds like a person. The pipeline does not verify meaning. That comparison is yours.
Who this is for
When a ChatGPT draft is the right thing to rewrite
This page is for text that already says what you mean and still reads like a GPT answer: the signposts, the three-item lists, the paragraph that restates the opening. It is not a general-purpose editor, and it is not a way to hide work you did not do.
A first draft you actually agree with
You asked ChatGPT for an outline or a first pass, then spent time correcting the facts. The argument is yours; the scaffolding is not. The rewrite is for the scaffolding.
Email and outreach that never quite sounds like you
GPT's balanced hedge is death in a message. Recipients answer people, not memos that take both sides of a request. Taking the signposts out is most of the job here.
SEO or help-centre copy that ranks and still reads assembled
Search engines and readers notice the same evenness. A page that hits the keywords and still sounds like a template is the case this rewrite was built for — not keyword stuffing, not a guarantee about rankings.
Not: a paper you have not read
If you cannot talk through the claims without the draft in front of you, a cleaner cadence will not make it yours. Use the detector instead, or write the thing.
Limits
What this will not promise
We do not promise that a rewrite of ChatGPT text will pass GPTZero, Turnitin, Originality.ai, or any other third-party detector. Those tools disagree with each other often enough that a number we have not measured would be a claim, not a result. The check we can stand behind is our own detector, and it is free to use separately.
A successful rewrite is not a licence to submit work you did not do. Schools, employers, and publishers have their own rules; this tool does not change them. If you cannot explain the claims without the draft in front of you, cleaner cadence will not make the writing yours.
Short and mid-length passages are where this works best. Long formal documents are the hard case for every automated rewriter, ours included. If the piece matters — a filing, a thesis chapter, a contract clause — edit by hand, or at least read the output as if you had written it from scratch.
FAQ
Humanizing ChatGPT text — FAQs
What the rewrite does to OpenAI's ChatGPT output, what it does not promise, and how to check the result yourself.
Will the rewrite pass GPTZero, Turnitin or Originality.ai?
We cannot promise that, and you should be suspicious of any tool that does. What we do is concrete: every rewrite is scored by our own AI detector, and you only receive a draft that clears it. Third-party detectors disagree with each other constantly — in our own testing two well-known ones split on roughly six out of ten borderline documents — so a pass on ours is evidence, not a guarantee about theirs.
Does it just swap words for synonyms?
No, and a synonym swapper would not help much anyway. The recognisable part of a ChatGPT draft is structural — paragraph uniformity, signposting, the balanced hedge, the summary close. The rewrite is generated from scratch by a model trained on the mapping from AI-shaped prose to human-written prose, so sentence boundaries and paragraph rhythm move, not only word choices.
Does it check that my meaning survived?
No. Nothing in this pipeline verifies that the rewrite says what your original said, and we would rather tell you that than imply a check we do not run. Read the output before you use it — particularly numbers, names, dates and citations, which are the first things to drift in any rewrite.
How much can I humanize for free?
2,000 words a day with no account and no card, or 10,000 a day signed in, up to 1,200 words per rewrite. That is a genuine daily allowance rather than a one-off trial that ends after a single paragraph.
Can I check the result with your detector?
Yes, and you should. The AI detector is free and separate, with a sentence-level report, so you can see which passages still read as machine-written rather than trusting a single overall verdict. It is the same detector that gates the rewrite, so it will usually agree — its value is in showing you where.
